The great migration: the necessary evil...

by Anfetamina Tóxica

The history of humans is formed by a huge series of pilgrimages. Certainly, the history tells us that those pilgrimages were mostly from the South to the North. Today, the same patterns are presented in the boarders between the McWorld´s and the third world countries. In the liberal philosophy, it can´t be forbidden the free transit of persons from country to another country. But the irruption of the tribes into the big cities of the McWorld has caused an unstabilization and the non liberals can´t allow these things to happen. Is the solution to their problems to surround with the McWorld with walls? Today, there are barriers like these located at Ceuta, in the south of Europe, and at Tijuana, in the south of the United States.

In the case of the barrier of Ceuta, the inmigrants decide to leave their homes of origin located at the south of Africa and move to the North. What they are looking in the Ceuta, town of Africa located near Spain, is to find happiness. For an African inmigrant, happiness means a perfect place where he can work and accumulate money, return to his mother country and take a woman as his wife. The inmigrants stay a few months in that town, make money till they have enough to pay a trip to the nearby country, Spain, and start to work. Later on, some of them decide to go to Germany or Italy to make more money and “be happy”. Of course! These ideals sound like a thread for Spain and other European countries that are nearby Africa. That´s why they have established a barrier between the two continents. Nevertheless, the barrier is passed since the inmigrants find new ways to travel to Spain and the humanitary organizations help the inmigrants by giving them out resources like food, medicines and clothes. Plus, some of the inmigrants can receive insurance from Spain and obtain the state of politic refugees. Others can obtain the permission of the government and be residents in the country.

So here is a big dilemma! Europe doesn´t want the third world countries to arrive to “their world”. They are a unique thread because they bring with them destruction. Nevertheless, they accept them as workers and are happy with them since they pay them less than other workers. How big the contradiction is, don´t you think? Well, as we have stated at the beginning: most of the pilgrimages started from the South and ended in the North. Europe has established a physical barrier, but can´t get rid of the inmigrants of the South. Plus, they can´t deny that they need those inmigrants in their factories to produce and have huge amounts of money for the prosperity of Europe. Then, pilgrimages are the necessary evil, there´s no way to stop them. For example, take the most significant case of a barrier like the Wall of Berlin that has been established and has been passed because anyone can´t fight against the necessary evil. But why we go so far? We have a great example of this idea near us: the wall between the United States and Mexico.

Between the towns of San Ysidro, USA and Tijuana, Mexico, you can perceive two different cultures and lifestyles. You can distinguish rich from poor, Barroque Catholicism and Puritan Catholicism, collective party from cult to the individual success. A cultural, political, religious, economic barrier has established between two neighbor but contrasting countries. The McWorld brings prosperity to its citizens, the mexicans in extreme poverty see that and want to travel to the North in order to satisfy their economic necessities and their desire for adventure. But when they are infront the McWorld, they found out that there is a huge barrier called by Carlos Fuentes as the: “Crystal Frontier”. A crystal barrier imposed by the McWorld citizens in order to avoid the entrance of Mexican inmigrants and stop them from making a life in the McWorld. But a here rises the same dilemma as in the case of the barrier located at Ceuta. The citizens of the United States live in a complete schizophrenia, they don´t want Mexican inmigrants to take their homeland and their jobs, but they are awared that they need them in the labor force in order to have mass production and give prosperity to the whole United States.

What will be the solution to the schizophrenia that the citizens of the United States are living? Sorman says that the solution to the migration process will be the introduction of capitalism in the south. But his solution can´t be possible in a third world country that is not prepared for the world of capitalism and where its huge roots can´t be broken. Plus, it´s a country with huge contradictions like the next example. The inmigrant is happy being with his warm family and his traditions, but he rejects his economic and political system. So he decides to move North. But what happens? He turns to be happy with the capitalism of the North, he is starting to obtain more money than in his original job from the South, but he misses his warm homeland, so suddenly he decides to return home. He can´t have all in one place.

Without wall or with wall, the inmigrants will still pass without permission. Plus it is true that the Mexican inmigrants are the necessary evil of the U.S. citizens, since they need them in their factories and the politicians need them for their votes. There could be a new statement in order to stop the migration process that refers to the free commerce between the countries. In other words, the process will be controlled if the free commerce is established. Nevertheless, the barrier will be still a “Crystal Wall”, where you might control the migration process, but you can´t stop it because it is porous. You can´t stop the necessary evil.

P.D. ...and the same story repeats on and on... xD
